Totsie was a fellow of the International Women’s Forum and is currently a member of the South African chapter of the International Women’s Forum (IWFSA).
She holds various positions with different establishments, including:
- Chairperson of Memela Pratt and Associates
- Director of Cadiz
- Director International Partnerships for Microbiocides (IPM) – a research-orientated NGO on HIV/AIDS prevention that focuses on women
In her private capacity, Totsie mentors young
Busisiwe Memela-Khambula, affectionately known as “Totsie”, is CEO of the South African Social Security Agency, with three decades of successful roles as a banker, chief executive, development activist and operations executive in non-profit, government, and banking sectors.
She served as Acting MD of the Land and Agricultural Bank of South Africa for 18 months in 2000/2001, where she was responsible for driving a new approach to agricultural finance focusing on commercial agriculture and serving emerging farmers previously not served by the bank.
Totsie has also served as CEO: Customer Care at FNB Homeloans; MD of Postbank; CEO of Eduloan and CEO of WDB Trust whose task was to serve women in rural SA in micro finance. Totsie grew in most of these institutions through various leadership levels.
As a result of her passion for social activism, she is a value creator and a turnaround strategist, using her passion and experience in the private and public sectors to enhance shareholder value to impact lives.
She has established a track record in guiding and assisting organisations in growing revenues; profits and impact, and has worked extensively in the banking industry in challenging roles for leading national brands where she has provided leadership and bespoke solutions.
She has served on various boards and governance committees nationally and internationally, which include, but not limited to:
- Committee member at the Standing Committee for the Revision of the Banks Act, 2008 – 2010.
- Commissioner of the Strause Commission – Presidential Commission of Inquiry into Rural Financial Services, 1995- 1996.
- She has served with IWF leadership committee prior to it becoming part of IWF global and was part of the team that drove the transition.
- She served as a director at International Partnerships for Microbiocide- a research company focusing on HIV/AIDS solutions with specific emphasis on women in the African continent.
- She served as a director at the University of Johannesburg Council representing the Convocation
- A board member at Alexander Forbes and chaired the Social and Transformation committee.
- She is currently a Director at Melanani & Melanani Women Investments
- She serves as a board member at Higher Ed Partners (AFRICA); an organizational that partners with universities to digitize their programmes
- She is a Trustee of Rounda – an NGO whose intention is to galvanise all of society to contribute towards poverty alleviation.
