Young Leaders Connect

Young Leaders Connect (YLC) IDEAL is an initiative of the International Women’s Forum South Africa (IWFSA), relaunched in August 2020 by IWFSA Patron, Dr. Zanele Mbeki. At its core is the YLC IDEAL Programme, dedicated to cultivating the next generation of ethical young women leaders and entrepreneurs.

Since its relaunch, the programme has grown significantly. As of January 2026, YLC has supported over 540 mentees through its mentorship and leadership development initiatives. With a clear vision to empower even more young leaders in the years ahead, YLC continues to expand its reach and deepen its impact.

The programme is overseen by a dedicated YLC committee, which reports to the Leadership Development Committee (LDC) of IWFSA, chaired by IWFSA Board Member Ms. Nene Molefi. The YLC IDEAL Programme identifies aspiring young leaders and entrepreneurs, nurture them into effective and ethical leaders, and create a dynamic platform for collaboration between IWFSA members, seasoned leaders, and the next generation of accomplished young women professionals and entrepreneurs.

In recognition of its impact, YLC IDEAL was named a winner in the Non-Profit Sector at the 11th Accenture Gender Mainstreaming Awards in 2023, in the category “Investing in Young Women.” This accolade reflects the programme’s ongoing commitment to empowering young women to become influential, values-driven leaders.

Our Strategic Partners

Our Initiatives

The YLC IDEAL Programme offers a structured and comprehensive leadership development framework, underpinned by four core pillars that guide and inform all aspects of its work. Collectively, these pillars create a holistic and enabling environment in which emerging women leaders are equipped to develop, excel, and lead with impact.

Mentorship

Mentorship

Mentorship is the cornerstone of the IDEAL Programme. Mentees (23–40 years old) are professionals from diverse industries, actively contributing to their communities. Each is paired with an experienced mentor for guidance throughout their leadership journey. Upon completion, they join the IDEAL Circle of Influence—YLC’s growing alumni network. The IDEAL Student Chapter further supports a structured leadership pipeline within select higher education institutions.

Board Leadership

Board Leadership

Our programme increases women’s representation on boards by preparing female leaders for governance roles and expanding access to opportunities across sectors. It equips young women with board readiness training, mentorship, and networking. To date, nearly 500 YLC members have been trained through board readiness programmes and related skills development.

Entrepreneurship

Entrepreneurship

The objective of this pillar is to transform YLC’s collective networks, standing, and partnerships into measurable economic power by enabling women-owned enterprises that are investable, scalable, and capable of generating lasting wealth. Since 2020, 130 female entrepreneurs received training, funding and upskilling through the IDEAL Entrepreneurship programme.

Conversations

Conversations

YLC hosts dynamic dialogues on relevant, thought-provoking topics, bringing together industry leaders, civil society, academics, and government. These include curated book club sessions with seasoned leaders and authors. Each engagement is designed to spark critical thinking, broaden perspectives, and equip participants with practical insights and tools from those who have walked the path before them.
